Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) has been shown to be effective at reducing at-risk alcohol use and is now also being used in many settings to address unhealthy drug use as well. This module addresses the medical risks and complications of marijuana use, present evidence for the effectiveness of brief interventions for patients using marijuana, and demonstrate how to apply the SBIRT model with a Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach to intervention for marijuana and other illicit drug use.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss potential benefits and problems which can result from marijuana use;
  • Outline an SBIRT screening protocol which can be used to screen and assess patients who use marijuana and other drugs; and
  • Conduct a Motivational Interviewing-based brief intervention with patients with unhealthy use of marijuana.
