Intimate Partner Violence SBIRT: The WINGS Intervention Model

Description:  This free webinar will present recent research findings on WINGS (Women Initiating New Goals of Safety), which is an evidence-based screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment and service (SBIRT) tool designed for women who use drugs or alcohol. WINGS may be delivered using a computerized self-paced tool or by a case manager. These two different modalities of WINGS have recently been evaluated in a randomized controlled trial with substance-using women in community corrections with promising results. This webinar will provide an overview and demonstration of the core components of WINGS, a single session one-hour intervention, which include: (1) providing brief psycho-education to raise awareness on the different types of IPV that substance-using women are likely to experience and how substance use of the women or partner may trigger IPV and how the experience IPV may trigger drug use; (2) screening for different types of IPV using a standardize tool and provide feedback on risks for IPV based on screening results; (3) increasing motivation and commitment for reducing risks for IPV and improving relationship safety using brief motivational interviewing; (4) developing a safety plan considering substance use-related risks for IPV; (5) enhancing social support from family and friends to address IPV and (6) setting realistic goals and developing an action plan to improve relationship safety. This seminar will also discuss organizational strategies for implementing WINGS.

Learning Objectives: As a result of participating in this webinar, you will be able to:

  1. understand the evidence-base of WINGS as an IPV SBIRT tool for identifying and addressing IPV among women who use drugs or alcohol;
  2. identify and describe core components of WINGS; and
  3. identify structural and organizational factors that may facilitate or impede the implementation of WINGS.

Presented by: 

Dr. Louisa Gilbert is an Associate Professor at the Columbia School of Social Work and a licensed social worker with 25 years of experience developing, implementing and testing multi-level interventions to address HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, trauma, partner violence and other co-occurring issues among vulnerable communities in the U.S. and Central Asia. She has served as the Co-Director of the Social Intervention Group since 1999 and the Co-Director of the Global Health Research Center of Central Asia since 2007. Her specific area of research interest has concentrated on advancing a continuum of evidence-based interventions to prevent intimate partner violence among drug-involved women and women in the criminal justice system. She has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals from this research.

Jessica Rowe is a Senior Program Specialist and oversees the Triangle Initiative at the Columbia Center for Teaching and Learning. She works with faculty and researchers to bring projects that unite research, classroom learning, and social good to fruition. She has worked on the ICAP Nursing E-learning platform and Option B+ course, which extends teaching and learning in nursing schools across Africa, the Teach Recovery project which teaches health professionals about cognitive dysfunction and remediation, and many computer supported behavioral interventions with the Social Intervention Group and the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies. She has an M.Des. in human centered design from the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
